it used to be
i had such faith
in the wisdom of the crowd

if a gaggle
of good-hearted people
cook together intentionally
and season with kindness
then how could the outcome
be anything less
than sublime?

well, you see
the uncomfortable truth is
of course it can
of course it will

screwing things up
is a thing we monkeys
are much too good at
to limit it just
to our solitary undertakings

we botch together
real good too
it turns out

but still
i’m pretty sure
our best bet
remains
one another

tough break
but we’re a dogged lot
and hope keeps springing
up like shoots of grass
